Indiana Preparing for Spring 2018 Season

IU Men’s Rugby will begin its Spring 2018 campaign this Saturday, February 24.  The boys are taking on the Indy Impalas in a tune-up game at Fishers High School and kickoff will be at 1pm.  In the fall, IU beat the Impalas 38-17.

Next week the B-side will travel to Indianapolis to play IUPUI.  A year ago, Indiana’s B-side beat IUPUI 29-17.

Spring Break will follow these two match weekends, and the team will return to action with three competitive matches starting with Notre Dame College on March 24 in Columbus, Ohio.  Then Arkansas State visits Bloomington on March 31 in a rematch from 2017.

The 1998 IU Rugby team members who reached the USA Rugby national semifinals will hold a 20th anniversary celebration on April 7, with the featured match coming against the Glendale Merlins u20s.

The D1A Playoffs are scheduled to begin on April 14, with matchups and locations pending until all D1A conference play has concluded.  Indiana has reached consecutive quarterfinals with defeats to Lindenwood and BYU.  This year’s tournament has expanded to 16 teams, and the semifinal and final will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.

Following the conclusion of the fifteens playoffs, the Hoosiers will focus on sevens and preparation for the USA 7’s Collegiate Rugby Championship in Philadelphia.  After qualifying for the 2015 CRC with a Big Ten Sevens Championship victory, IU has now received an automatic bid to the tournament in three successive seasons.  In 2017 Indiana advanced to the semifinal and fell to defending champions Cal 29-14.  The tournament’s partnership with NBC has expired, and this year’s CRC will be broadcast by ESPN.
