The IU Men’s Rugby team is ready to begin the fall 2017 regular season. An experienced freshman class with recruits from across the country adds to this year’s roster, and the Hoosiers are eager to take the field in pursuit of their fifth undefeated Big Ten season.

Players arrived for training in early August, with their first preseason game against Bethel College on August 26th.  This also marked the club’s 55th Anniversary Reunion Weekend with over 100 Old Boys coming to Bloomington to celebrate the club’s anniversary. After a slow start the Hoosiers jumped out to a 33-0 halftime lead over Bethel.  One slip up allowed the visitors to score in the second half, but the Hoosiers secured their first victory of the preseason with the final score 71-5.  The alumni were pleased with the performance on the field and it was an eventful and successful weekend.

The Hoosiers continued the preseason with their second home game against the Indy Impalas on September 2nd. A young lineup took the field for IU and it was a competitive first half. A try by freshman wing Luke Sutherland from sophomore Blake Stone’s kick was the highlight of the game, as the team came away with a 38-17 win.

Teddy Terezis, the club’s senior captain, has high expectations for his team and anticipates another strong season for the Hoosiers, “I believe this team has the potential to be one of the best IU teams to date. For the fall, we are the defending Big Ten Champions and our goal is another undefeated season.”

The team has further amplified its roster with skilled freshmen recruits from Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Florida.

“Although we graduated a great group of players last season, we have some very strong recruits and a lot of returning veteran players.” Terezis added.

IU is traveling this weekend for the final preseason game against D1-AA varsity program Lindenwood University-Belleville. The Lynx played a very competitive schedule last season and will be a good test for Indiana before they begin their Big Ten regular season. Kickoff this Saturday, September 9 is at 3:30pm CST.
