BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The IU Men’s Rugby Club has started its fall schedule on the front foot with victories over Lincoln Park RFC and IUPUI. The Hoosiers are building on the momentum of the past few seasons and incorporating some fresh faces into their experienced lineup in preparation for the BTU Regular Season, which kicks off September 17 at Michigan State.
IU welcomed Lincoln Park RFC to Bloomington on August 27, and both clubs got some quality experience in a hard-fought 43-22 Hoosier victory. Head coach Sopa Enari fielded a mixed starting
15 of veterans such as forwards Mike Weimer and Connor Marsh, and some younger players such as halfbacks Dan Devlin and Takura Suzuki. Arizona transfers Tyler Sousley and Dakoda Worth also had a crack on Evan Williams Field for the first time.
With one victory under their belt, the Hoosiers spent the next week with higher expectations for their second matchup vs. IUPUI. IU followed through with a more clinical performance against the Jaguars, winning 85-0. A more experienced lineup led by Captain Bryce Campbell built on the previous week’s performance, but the veteran leaders agree that there is still much work to be done before the BTU season begins.
The Hoosiers will round up the preseason with Old Boys Weekend on September 9-10, culminating in a match against Bethel College, and a B-side matchup with USI. Bethel is a newly consolidated varsity program in their third season, and are coming off a solid victory over Western Michigan last weekend. IU will look to enjoy the support of its proud alumni and put on a good show before the grind of the Big Ten season begins next week.
